Don't let anything hold you back.
This is an image of my parents and I after hiking to the end of Ceder Creek Falls about a year ago. This hike was also in the same month, two years prior, that I was diagnosed with Idiopathic Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). For those that are unaware, RA is an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks itself causing chronic inflammation especially in the major joints. The typical onset of this condition ranges from thirty to sixty years old, so it definitely came as a surprise when the doctors informed me of my diagnosis. Having to deal with this condition forced me to withdraw from sports and other physical activities which was very disheartening for me. Growing up, I always enjoyed playing sports like football and basketball, along with other activities like hiking and snowboarding. The thought of losing the ability to do what I enjoyed the most was a tough pill to swallow. Luckily for me, we tried several different medication and found success in one that reduced the symptoms of my variation of RA.
As time passed, I was slowly able to build my strength back up and return to doing the things that I enjoy the most. I joined intramural sports teams here at SDSU, went on hikes all over San Diego County, completed a Spartan Race, and much more. I would say that this disease was a blessing in disguise. Before my diagnosis I lacked motivation to go out and enjoy life, whereas now I try to experience new things and utilize my days. Although I sometimes struggle through the aches and pains of my disease, I use it as motivation to go out and try new things, and enjoy life to its fullest extent.

Your backstory gives your six-word memoir new meaning and real power. Everyone will experience the kind of challenges you have had at some point in life, but very few people have these challenges in their teens. I'm glad you persevered and turned the illness into a motivator.
ReplyDeleteHi Eljhon,
ReplyDeleteI found your story really inspiring. I am also someone who grew up loving to play basketball and football and don't know what I would do if I had to go through something like this. It makes me appreciate having a healthy body more and your story reminds me not to take it for granted. It is great to hear that you are able to do the things you enjoy again and didn't let your condition hold you back. Maybe I will see you on the basketball courts for intramurals at SDSU!
Hi Eljhon,
ReplyDeleteThat was a very moving blog about the journey that you went through. It is awesome that you finally found medication that was able to help you become active again. This really shows me that I should get out more and join intramural sports like you. Ever since high school ended I have not been active at all and it definitely shows. Thank you for the story, this is the motivation I need to get started on my journey of becoming fit.
